As part of the CARES Act, Congress enacted the Paycheck Protection Program to provide more than $500 Billion in forgivable loans to small businesses to cover expenses like payroll costs in 2020. Over 5.2 million small businesses applied. However, after the loans were issued, the IRS promulgated a ruling that any expenses associated with or paid for with PPP loans that are normally tax deductible, are NOT deductible as business expenses this time. The IRS reasoning is since the PPP loans are intended to be forgiven, the agency does not feel that businesses should have the opportunity to receive a forgiven loan and a tax deduction.

We are pleased to announce that AGC MA has been awarded the AGC of America 2020 Chapter Public Relations Award for the work on the 2019 Opioid Awareness Campaign.
Through a grant funded by MCAP, the campaign was launched in January, 2019 at an AGC-led Commercial Construction Industry Opioid Summit that included medical profession representatives, health insurance providers, AGC MA member firms, labor union benefit plans, and labor leaders to discuss the issue and work towards practical solutions.
The campaigns mission is to create awareness and support the industry by providing continuous resources for employers and employees through educational platforms and communication channels.
Thanks to all our industry partners for their commitment and support and to AGC MA's Lisa Frisbie, Barbara Canoni and Kara Morgan for all of their work behind the scenes.

AGC MA is pleased to announce Francis Colantonio, Chair & CEO, Colantonio, Inc. has been named 2020-2022 Board Chair of the Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts (AGC MA). Fran previously served as 2018-2020 Vice Chair of the Board.
As Chairman of the Board, Fran will preside over all meetings of the Board of Directors and will ensure that the Board acts responsibly to set policies and guidelines that fulfill AGC's mission. Additionally, Fran will also provide critical leadership, guidance and oversight to ensure that Board policy directives are implemented and that strategic planning goals are met.
Fran shares that "As the AGC MA Board Chairman, I am ready to work with the board, staff and members to address the extraordinary challenges we face in our industry. The Association is committed to providing our members with the resources they need to thrive during this stressful time, It is crucial that our members engage with us directly with ideas, questions, and concerns. We must ensure we are as helpful to them as we can be."

Founded in 1935 by a group of commercial general contractors, AGC of Massachusetts was an outgrowth of the prior New England Branch of the AGC of America located for several years at 902 Park Street in Worcester, according to a 1931 Annual Report. Since then, your AGC has been a powerful voice for the commercial building industry throughout the Commonwealth. For 85 years, AGC MA has effectively promoted and protected the interests of the GC and CM at the State House, with the Building Trades, Owners & Designers and with state and federal regulatory agencies.

Another group of Blackstone Valley Tech students have completed their ACE Mentorship Program! On Monday November 25th, juniors from the Blackstone Valley Technical High School gave individual presentations on their experience in the ACE Program and received their certificates of achievement.
"They showed me a different side to construction and changed my perspective on what actually happens behind the scenes. Hearing their stories that led them to where they are, led me to the conclusion that I want to be just like them in my career and do what I love" said Maribeth Buteau a senior in the Construction Technology program at BVT.

On Thursday, October 24th more than 250 industry colleagues attended AGC's bi-annual Build New England Awards, honoring twelve projects that demonstrated Building Excellence through collaboration.
AGC MA also launched the first AGC MA Member Distinction Awards recognizing individual members, Sarah Hotchkiss, Commodore Builders, Kathleen Freitas, BOND, Shaun Carvalho, Shawmut Design & Construction, Eric Stalmon, Marr Companies and Kenneth Rubinstein, Preti Flaherty who have gone above and beyond in their support of our mission.
