Workforce Development
In addition to providing member services that include valuable professional development opportunities, exemplary safety training, and dedicated advocacy for our members and the industry at large, we also take focus on key initiatives that support our communities.
When looking to the future, the focus of Workforce Development is continuing to become more critical to the core of the industry.
The AGC MA WFD Taskforce is currently developing programs and resources that build awareness and educate teachers, school counselors, parents, and students of the highly rewarding career options in the commercial construction industry.
The focus and mission of the committee through our members is to recruit, retain and train the future construction workforce industry.
CONSTRUCTINGMA.org was created and developed by the Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts [AGC MA] to educate parents, teachers and school counselors, high school and college students, veterans and job seekers on the many options and benefits of choosing a career in commercial construction.
AGC MA BUILDING ADVANCEMENT EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The AGC MA Building Advancement Externship offers a unique professional development opportunity connecting educators directly to the construction industry. This program provides experiential learning led by many cutting-edge commercial construction professionals.
The externship has been designed to offer a background on the business of commercial construction, an overview of field training and safety programs, and information on project management and industry innovations.
ADOPT-A-SCHOOL
Each year, the AGC MA Boston Pipeline Adopt-a-School program introduces 4th and 5th grade students in Boston Public Schools to the wide range of STEM-focused career opportunities in the construction industry. Led by the AGC MA Committee for Diversity and Inclusion, this initiative connects students—especially those from underrepresented communities—with local construction professionals through hands-on learning, storytelling, and interactive activities designed to spark curiosity and build awareness of career possibilities.
Launched in 2022, the program has grown into a highly anticipated annual event held simultaneously at multiple elementary schools across the city. Activities include a Lego project management challenge, a sustainability-focused game, and engaging discussions around the children’s book Celeste Tunnels Underground, facilitated by the author herself. Adopt-a-School is a key part of AGC MA’s broader commitment to early workforce development and to building a more inclusive, representative construction industry.
FUTURE BUILDERS MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
The Future Builders Mentoring Program is a paid, curriculum-based initiative designed to introduce high school students to professional careers in construction management. Over the course of eight sessions from March through May, students engage in interactive lessons that combine technical knowledge with essential “power skills” such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving—providing a foundation for real-world success in the design and construction industry.
Open to 11th-grade students with an interest in architecture, engineering, contracting, and related fields, the program offers a team-based learning environment led by practicing industry professionals. Through mentorship, hands-on activities, and exposure to diverse career paths, Future Builders supports the development of the next generation of construction leaders.
