Checking into Safety Inspection and Violation Records
Contractor employers should be aware that when awarding work, it is worthwhile to check into the safety inspection and violation record of each firm. Keep in mind that the potential of one serious accident or fatality on a jobsite - regardless of who is responsible - will impact every worker and every firm on site.
Before any contract is awarded, it is advisable that a member of your management staff follow a format of due diligence and check a contractor's history of safety violations and inspections on the OSHA website at osha.gov.
You can access this information by clicking on Inspection Data in the right-hand column and then clicking on Establishment Search and then typing in the name of the firm along with additional information.
Your firm may find this information useful in order to help further evaluate the jobsite safety and health practices of a firm and follow-up with any appropriate action. For example, inspectional data might indicate that there is a trend on unsafe practices with fall protection with a contractor. Your safety personnel may want to have the opportunity to address this history and be sure that it has been incorporated into that contractor's safety plan and procedures.
