This past September, the AGC MA Risk Forum held its third meeting of 2018and the Forum is quickly becoming an essential meeting ground for AGC MA members who manage risk within their organizations.  The Forum, chaired by Preti Flaherty’s Ken Rubinstein, was created to be a place where AGC MA members involved in legal, risk management, and safety could come together for an open exchange of ideas on the risk landscape in the modern construction industry.

Topics presented in the Forum meetings include “Cyber Security and the Construction Industry” by Shawmut’s Chief Legal Officer Doug Lareau, Hinckley Allen’s Christina Lewis’s discussion of “How to Prepare for the Massachusetts Pay Equity Law”, Commonsense Construction Law’s Stan Martin leading a conversation on the impacts of the steel tariffs, and WillisTowerWatson’s Luke Nolan’s advanced discussion of Subcontractor Default Insurance.  In September, BOND’s S.V.P. of Risk Management Paul James and Steve Massey, BONDS Corporate Safety Director, provided an insightful presentation on “Current Issues and Challenges in Subcontractor Prequalification.”  These are just some of the topics covered so far and the Forum is always looking for ideas of interest from AGC MA members.

Dellbrook|JKS’s Director of Safety and Risk Management Rob Carson is an active member of the Forum and has participated in each meeting thus far.  He sums up his experience with Forum as follows:

“The Risk Forum has been a great way for me to hear from industry peers and leaders about not only the challenges they have faced but also open discussions around the successful resolution to those challenges, which we all face at one point or another.  Being part of this Group has allowed me to reflect on our current practices and really use the information as a measuring stick to our own risk strategy.  What I like the most about the group is that we are all there for the same purpose, it is professional, well organized, productive, and brings together people with a wide range of experience in the Construction Industry.”

If an AGC MA firm has an inhouse person dedicated to legal, insurance, and/or safety matters, or an AGC MA firm is looking gain a better understanding of these topics, your participation is welcome and strongly encouraged.  The next Risk Forum meeting is scheduled for January 2019.
