Guides to Design and Construction
The Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts and the Boston Society of Architects Task Force on Recommended Practices represents an inter-industry effort to educate building clients and industry professionals about the best practices of various project delivery systems. In 1997, the task force published Client Advisor which introduced clients to concepts and information intended to assist them in making intelligent decisions when planning and implementing building programs.
In 2004, four additional publications were developed: Procurement, Program Management, Construction Administration and Design/Build. Each of these publications are available for a small shipping charge.
- Client Advisor: Procurement
Procurement has been written to assist clients, providers and users of construction-related services with the evaluation and selection of architects, engineers, contractors, and construction managers. Recommendations serve two purposes—to make clear the roles and responsibilities of key participants in the design and construction of buildings, and to assist the client in the procurement process.
- Client Advisor: Design/Build
In its simplest definition, Design/Build is a type of contractual arrangement that allows a project client to contract with a single entity to provide both design and construction services. The Design/Build entity is typically either a single firm or a teaming arrangement involving a designer and a contractor.
- Client Advisor: Construction Administration
Our goal in Construction Administration is to introduce the Client to normal construction activities, to the relationships between these activities, and to the primary players involved—the architect and contractor and the members of their team.
- Client Advisor: Program Management
This publication outlines the potential scope of work for program management, describes how clients might elect to use program
management services, and attempts to answer the following common questions: What is a program manager? What are the differences between program management services and other delivery methods? When should a client hire a program manager? How can a client be sure that program management services most appropriately correspond to a client’s mission and project objectives?
