7th Edition Building Code Update
AGC has learned that the long-awaited 7th edition of the Massachusetts state building code should be unveiled by February 2008. For the first time, the new edition will be based on the International Building Code with amendments peculiar to Massachusetts integrated into the Code. According to Tom Riley of the Department of Public Safety, the new code will run concurrently with the 6th edition for six months with the decision on which edition to utilize being left entirely to the “regulated communities” (owner/designer/contractor) as opposed to the regulators.
AGC is making plans to hold a workshop in April on the new 7th edition Code with representatives from the Department of Public Safety and other code experts. Watch for additional informationin 2008 or contact Bob Petrucelli at petrucelli@agcmass.org.

Promulgating the 7th edition of the Building Code
AGC Building Interest Group met in late winter to discuss the lack of progress with the new 7th edition of the state building code. Guest speakers Vernon Woodword (The Sullivan Code Group) and chair of the BSA Codes Committee and John Nunarri (HFMH Architects) discussed the difficulties in the department of public safety and the new code. Contractors will continue to follow the 6th edition until the new code is ready sometime in 2008.
For those of you who are venturing into single or two-family home building, the Seventh Edition of the Building Code for this type of construction is available. The 7th Edition will go into effect on October 1, 2007.
